Improving children's stay in hospital

Music touches

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (UCIP) at Son Espases Hospital has music therapy thanks to Lions Club de Calvià. Our organisation has been supporting the programme since its creation in 2016. First by providing the musical instruments, and then by financing the sessions that the qualified music therapist, Pau Català, carries out in the UCIP.

Lions’ support has enabled hundreds of children and their families to benefit from this innovative therapy over the past 5 years. In 2022 alone, 101 patients received music therapy at the Ucip. Last year, a total of 372 sessions were held.

Music touches us all without touching us physically. In a session, one can work with musical instruments, the use of the voice or with recorded music. Music therapy is a non-pharmacological complementary therapy, applied by a qualified professional, which uses musical experience to promote changes in the person. In the hospital setting, there is scientific evidence that music therapy can alleviate pain perception, reduce anxiety or promote patient activation. It is also used to work on the management of emotions linked to hospital admission.
